Things To Know About Laser Hair Removal: Each area takes an average of 6 treatments or more for the hair to be completely removed.  Some hair is permanently removed with each treatment and you will have noticeable thinning after each treatment.  Laser hair removal is permanent, however a few hairs may come back over the next few years requiring a maintenance treatment.

Before Your Treatment: You cannot be treated with the laser if you are recently tanned by sun exposure or spray/self-tanner.  You will need to be clean shaven before your treatment.  If we have to shave your back during your treatment a $50 fee will be charged in addition to your treatment.  You cannot pluck or wax the hair being treated with the laser for one month before your treatment (you can shave the hair or cut it with scissors but you cannot pluck, wax, or use dipilatory creams for one month before the first treatment and between treatments).

Post Treatment & Between Treatments: depending on the area you are having treated with laser hair removal, the area has a particular growth phase of the hair and based on that area you will be given a period of time to come back in for your next treatment.  You will also be required to purchase an aftercare product costing approximately $40 and an approved sunblock to put on the area after your treatments (these products will last for multiple treatments depending on how large of area you are treating).

Q&A with Dr. Seiler

What type of hair can you permanently remove with the Lightsheer Duet laser?

Laser Hair Removal is the most common cosmetic laser procedure performed in the US.  It provides great results if the right device is used by a trained practitioner.  One must also treat the right type of hair for it to give results.  The hair must have some pigment/color for it to work, and the darker the hair, the better the result.  It will not work for blond, white, grey, or “peach fuzz” hair because those hairs do not contain enough pigment for the laser to target.

How do I prepare for the procedure?

You will need to come in cleanly shaven for the treatment.  However, if you have light colored hair and you need to show Dr. Seiler the color during the consult to make sure the hair is dark enough, you should let the hair be visibly grown out.  You cannot be freshly tanned or have tanned skin (call to inquire about this).  You should not wax, pluck, string or do anything that will pull the hair our of the follicle for at least a month before the first treatments or at anytime between treatments.

What is the down time involved in laser hair removal?

The “downtime” is usually very minimal.  You may have mild irritation or redness for a short period of time after (usually not more than a day or so).  Most patients notice little to nothing the next day.  For patients that get moderate to severe razor burn, they may get a little more than average irritation but it is usually minimal (and those patients are the ones that notice a really quick and great result early in the treatment series and a quick ease of shaving).  When I call the next day to check on my patients, most people tell me that they don’t really notice redness or irritation.  Some of them barely remember that they had it done.  Proper aftercare (provided for you before you leave) and icing afterwards will greatly help reduce downtime and help to protect the skin.

How many treatments will it require for the  hair to be completely gone?

Laser Hair removal usually requires an average of six treatments to permanently remove nearly all of the hair in the area treated.  Certain areas like the underarm may require fewer treatments but it is usually six.  3-4 treatments is usually enough to see a significant amount of thinning and hair loss and some people will not do more if they are happy with shaving every now and then.  If the patient really wants removal of all hair, then it usually takes 6 or more treatments.  Darker skin patients may require more than the average because you have to be careful with the strength of each treatment so as not to damage the pigment or skin.

Can the Lightsheer Duet treat dark skin?

Click to view answer in Video format

There are few laser hair removal devices that can treat dark skin and few practitioners who are well trained enough to safely treat dark skin.  The Lumenis Lightsheer laser is the best laser for hair removal in all skin types (even African American skin).  Although the procedure is slightly more risky in darker skin, the procedure is very safe and successful if done by the right practitioner with the right device.
