BIRMINGHAM IPL PHOTOREJUVENATION SPECIALIST

IPL PHOTOREJUVENATION...

  • treats sun-damaged skin, pigment, skin redness, rosacea, broken capillaries
  • very effective treatment if performed by a highly experienced and specialized laser physician
  • very minimal downtime with redness generally subsided by the next day
  • generally a multi-treatment procedure

IPL (intense pulsed light) technology improves the appearance of photoaged skin, removes age spots, most benign brown pigments, redness caused by broken capillaries, spider veins and facial veins. These treatments have an extremely high measure of patient satisfaction, and can restore a more youthful appearance without patient downtime or a prolonged recovery. Instead of treating a single isolated area or imperfection, we can treat the full face, neck, chest, arms, legs, or hands. Look years younger with IPL Photorejuvenation technology.

Dr. Seiler's Notes: Why are patients ever unhappy with the results of cosmetic procedures at other practices?

Q&A with Dr. Seiler

What is IPL used to treat?

One of the best procedures I perform is IPL (intense pulsed light).  It uses different wavelengths of light to target different pigments in the skin.  It will remove sun damage, brown spots, freckles, moles, melasma.  It will also resolve spiderveins, redness, and rosacea.  It can be used anywhere on the body, has minimal downtime, and most patients notice minimal redness and no swelling (can wear makeup right after procedure).  Brown spots will get darker and then fade.  Patients usually receive 3-6 treatments and an occasional maintenance treatment.  Although IPL is used to target pigment/color, with time and successive treatments, patients really notice (in addition to the pigment/color resolution) a better overall look to the skin, softer skin, pore shrinkage, decrease in acne and great healthy looking skin!

What are the precautions to take before the procedure?

Although I take an extensive medical history and discuss history and risk of skin cancer, the main issue is that the patient cannot be freshly/recently tanned, and I have to be less aggressive in treating darker skin patients.  This is a procedure more commonly done in the cold months but can be done in certain patients year around.  The patient will have minimal downtime, but you should be on good skincare to help with the healing and the result.  You do not really peel, but a patient with a lot of brown spots will see darkening and shedding of the pigment which is a good sign of a positive result.  It is very safe with minimal discomfort.  Patients tolerate the procedure and the minimal downtime very well.  It is a very short procedure.  You can do it before/after work or on your lunch break.  Patients like to come in before an event for a light treatment to refresh the skin, giving them a better overall look to the skin.  So there is little to do before and after the procedure.  It is very simple to undergo.

How many treatments will be required for IPL?

I tell patients they will typically require 3-6 treatments and will benefit from an occasional maintenance treatment.  It depends on the condition we are treating.  IPL for brown pigment conditions typically require fewer treatments (as few as one or two for a great result).  “Red” conditions like spider veins and rosacea sometimes require more depending on the severity of the problem to get the condition under control (3-6) before the maintenance phase.  Maintenance treatments depend on how well you take care of your skin, how well you avoid sun exposure, and how severe your condition is.  Remember that IPL will also help improve the overall look to the skin and not just the pigment/color, therefore maintenance treatments will continue to improve the skin.
