IPL is Dr. Seiler's favorite minimal downtime, non-invasive treatment for sun-damaged skin, redness/rosacea or capillary issues. Dr. Seiler is Birmingham's board certified cosmetic laser surgeon. He specializes in advanced IPL techniques that provide great results.
What is IPL?
Advanced IPL Photorejuvenation (intense pulsed light) technology uses multiple wavelengths of light to target red and brown skin discolorations. Unlike a laser (single wavelength of light), IPL is able to target multiple colors with various pulsed-light filters. Although reduction of colored targets is the main result, IPL will also stimulate collagen remodeling which leads to smoother and healthier looking skin.
What does it treat?
- Photoaged Skin
- Age Spots, Sun Damage, Freckles
- Melasma, Pregnancy Mask, Hormonal Hyperpigmentation
- Acne and Enlarged Pores
- Rosacea, Skin Redness
- Spider Veins, Broken Capillaries
- Skin Discolorations
- Abnormally Discolored Scars
IPL can safely treat skin discolorations on all areas of the body.
When will you see results and how long do results last?
When treating brown discolorations, pigment will darken and after a few days of tolerable shedding, you will see immediate reduction in abnormal brown pigment (your normal skin color will be maintained). You will be amazed at what one treatment will do but multiple treatments and maintenance treatments will likely be recommended for optimal results.
Red discolorations, including rosacea and spider veins will take time to resolve and generally require multiple treatments. However each treatment will produce results.

What is the downtime of IPL?
The beauty of IPL is it has minimal downtime. Mild redness generally only lasts one to two days. If treating major red discolorations, you may have mild swelling for one to two days. Depending on the body area treated, pigment shedding can last for a few days to a week. Makeup can be worn immediately after treatment.
IPL is a quick treatment that is well tolerated. You will be given a very detailed pre and post-care regimen which will ensure safe healing and great results.
Are all IPL devices and treatments the same?
Please note that not all IPL devices are the same. See Dr. Seiler's video on this page regarding the differences. Dr. Seiler uses what he believes is the best device on the market. The Lumenis One IPL is widely recognized as an IPL device superior to most other IPLs on the market.
Patients often comment how much better their treatments have been at Seiler Skin due to the quality of the IPL device Dr. Seiler uses and due to his expertise in maximizing the potential of his IPL device. Read our patient reviews on IPL with Dr. Seiler.
