Frequently asked Botox questions:

1. Is Botox a poison? Is Botox botulism?
Botox is not a poison and is not botulism. Botox is a purified protein and a finished medical perscription product.

2. Is Botox safe? Is there enough medical information about using Botox?
Botox neurotoxin has been used therapeutically for over 20 years to treat a variety of medical conditions. Botox treatment has been approved in more than 75 countries.

3. Is Botox a cosmetic filler?
Botox does not fill in facial lines. Botox cosmetic relaxes the muscles underneath the skin that cause frown lines and wrinkles.

4. Are there creams that work better than Botox?
While there are effective topical creams for the surface of the skin, Botox works below the surface of the skin. A cream will smooth the appearance of the skin surface and Botox will actually relax the muscle beneath the skin.

5. How much does Botox cost?
The cost of Botox treatment is determined on a case to case basis, however, you can expectto pay between $150 to $500 per treatment.

6. Who is Botox for?

Patients with facial lines and wrinkles.

Patients with general or migraine headaches.

Patients with excessive sweating.

7. Can Botox build up in your body?
No, Botox does not accumulate in the body.

8. Should I see a specialized physician for Botox Treatment?
Botox should only be administered by experienced aesthetic-specialty physicians, including general, laser, and plastic surgeons, dermatologists, ophthalmologist and oculoplastic surgeons.

9. Will Botox leave me with a “frozen” or “startled” look on my face?
When Botox is administered by an experienced physician, you should not loose the ability to show expression.

10. Is Botox necessary even if I have had plastic surgery or other cosmetic procedures?
Most people will still develop frown lines and wrinkles even after plastic surgery. Botox would be an effective way to treat the development of frown lines after plastic surgery.

Tell me about Botox and where it is used

Botox is used to minimize lines and wrinkles in areas of facial movement.  The most common areas treated are the forehead lines, the lines between the eyes (frown lines), and lines/wrinkles around the eyes commonly called the crow’s feet.  Botox can be used to decrease sweating and migraines.  It can also be used to help lines around the mouth (commonly called “smoker’s lines”), although that is more commonly treated with a filler or laser resurfacing.

Is Botox safe?

Yes Botox is very safe.  It has been FDA approved for over 20 years and it has been approved for cosmetic use for about 12 years.  I have had Botox myself and many of my family members, friends, and employees have had Botox.  I do a large amount of Botox in my practice and feel that it is very safe.  Also, Botox is actually not Botulism in toxin form, it is the purified protein form that has the muscle relaxation capabilities, but it is not the disease causing toxin!  In addition, I use a very small amount of Botox in the face compared to what is required if it were absorbed in the blood (which it is not) and if it were the actual toxin (which it is not).  So, it is very safe!

What is the difference between Botox and Dysport?

I use Botox in my practice instead of its competitor Dysport mainly because Dysport does not last as long and it spreads more.  I can keep Botox very locally affecting the muscle, whereas Dysport is more difficult to keep from spreading (increasing the risk of “heaviness”).  Botox has been available in the US much longer than Dysport and I have a lot of experience with Botox.  I have tried Dysport and simply feel that Botox is better.  Some people think that Dysport is cheaper but it really isn’t because more Dysport is used per area so the prices are really comparable (and remember that Dysport doesn’t last as long).  The price per unit of Dysport is cheaper but the patient will require 2.5-4 times as much Dysport to see less result than with Botox.

How do you pick a physician for Botox?

In choosing your physician to perform Botox, you should ask such questions as:  How many treatments have you done?  How often do you use it and what is your experience with it?  I see complications (or lack of result or too much result) from other places in town that have undertrained/underskilled providers of Botox.  You can get a great result with Botox, but you have to be really careful who you go to.  I encourage my patients to ask me how many treatments I have done and what my level of confidence is in the treatment and they feel very comfortable when I answer those questions.  There are very few physicians in the city who do as much if not more Botox than I do.  It is a very common thing that I do in my practice and something in which I really specialize.

Another great question to ask the physician is “would you do Botox yourself?”  And for me the answer is “YES!”  I do my own Botox every 2-3 months and I love the result.  My friends, family, and patients have noticed a big difference in my skin over the years.  I would definitely recommend it.  I have given it to family, friends, and employees and it is something I really believe in.  And I think it is very safe!
